MUMBAI — The terrifying hostage crisis that gripped Powai on Thursday, ending with the death of short filmmaker Rohit Arya, was a meticulously planned operation rather than a spontaneous act, according to ongoing police investigations. Arya held 17 teenagers captive in a studio under the guise of shooting a web series, transforming the set into a controlled and calculated trap.
What Investigations Revealed
Investigators have uncovered evidence detailing Arya’s extensive preparations to ensure the success and longevity of his siege. To prevent any unexpected entry, Arya reportedly had a broken latch on the studio door repaired and installed motion sensors to alert him to any attempt to breach the entrance. Furthermore, he strategically placed CCTV cameras at key locations within the studio, tracking the live feed directly on his smartphone.
The deceased filmmaker even prepared for a prolonged standoff by stockpiling food for the hostages.
To deflect suspicion about his real, sinister intentions, Arya maintained a compelling cover story. He informed the teenagers and his own assistant, Rohan Raj Aher (who also became a hostage), that the project was a short film about “children rebelling against corruption.” He convinced them that a scene in the production required them to be convincingly kidnapped, tragically setting the stage for the real-life trauma that unfolded.
Why He Planned
October 28, 2024, a rental agreement for 36 months was signed in the name of Anjali Arya, Rohit’s wife, for a flat in the Shivtirth Nagar area of Kothrud. The flat is owned by a person named Deshpande. However, after the couple moved in, neighbours and other residents in the society started complaining about their inappropriate behaviour. As the complaints increased, the owner issued a notice asking the Arya couple to vacate the flat within a month.
However, Rohit refused to comply and even allegedly stopped paying rent. On March 2, 2025, the flat owner sent a legal notice, asking the couple to vacate the premises.
The revelations paint a chilling picture of Arya’s mind, exposing the dark premeditation behind the crisis that terrorized the suburban neighbourhood before police were able to secure the release of the teenagers. Further investigation is underway to determine the motive behind this elaborate and deadly plot.
