New Delhi: A man, aged 33, has been apprehended by the police in Delhi for deceiving seven individuals out of ₹14.80 lakh. He posed as a doctor, from the World Health Organization (WHO) and offered them job opportunities at the WHO’s office. The scam came to light after a complaint was filed with the Jyoti Nagar Police Station, where the victims explained how they had been tricked by this imposter.
The accused, named Gaurav Kumar, pretended to be working as a doctor at WHO’s office. He enticed his victims with jobs that included salaries and additional benefits. To gain their trust further, he even showed them a WHO identity card. Assured them that official job offer letters would be sent via email.
Believing in this impersonator, all seven victims transferred ₹14.30 lakh through UPI payments in five installments to his account and also handed over ₹50,000 in cash. As promised, they received offer letters in their email inbox. Soon, they realized that these documents were fraudulent, after verifying with the organization. In a twist of events, when confronted by the victims themselves, the impersonator resorted to threatening them with consequences.
Following these incidents, Gaurav Kumar was arrested by the police from the Meet Nagar area. While being questioned, he acknowledged his mistake. Openly admitted that he completed his Bachelor of Occupational Therapy at a college, in Ghaziabad but has been unable to find employment. To facilitate his deception, he obtained a fake WHO identity card, which he brazenly wore around his neck to enhance his credibility.
The authorities have recovered a mobile phone and the counterfeit WHO ID card bearing his name. Further investigations are ongoing as the police seek to unravel any additional details related to this intricate case of fraud.
