Damoh: From Damoh city in Madhya Pradesh comes a shocking case of medical fraud where a man posing as a British cardiologist had performed heart surgery and killed at least seven patients at a private Christian missionary hospital. The accused was harbouring the false identity of a British doctor, N. John Kem to get employment at the hospital, police claimed, and has been identified as Narendra Vikramaditya Yadav.
Yadav falsely claimed to be a certified cardiologist from the UK, and patients were made to depend on him for critical heart procedures, the news agency reported. But its deception was exposed when one or more complaints were lodged about botched surgeries and suspicious patient deaths. The district president of the Child Welfare Committee and a practising advocate, Deepak Tiwari, brought the matter to the notice of the authorities by filing a formal complaint with the Damoh district magistrate.
The official death toll is seven, but the official number of victims could be much higher, Tiwari revealed. “Some patients who survived came out and spoke about their experience … that we knew that would happen. They also revealed that one family took their father to the hospital, but they did not want the surgery. Instead, they decided to bring him to Jabalpur. We began to investigate then, and that’s when they realized something was off,” Tiwari said.
He further added that the real Dr N John Kem is a legitimate practitioner in the United Kingdom, and Yadav has a criminal history against him, including a case kept by Hyderabad police. Yadav never dished out authentic identification or medical credentials, even during his employment with Tiwari, he claimed.
Outrage and a critical review of the hospital’s verification process and what could happen at hospitals in general have been sparked by the incident. Authorities are investigating the incident and trying to get to the bottom of what damage the impersonator did.
