Ranya Rao Gold Smuggling Case: The troubles of jailed Kannada actress Ranya Rao, who is serving a sentence in the gold smuggling case, are not decreasing. Ranya has received a notice from the Directorate of Revenue Department to pay a fine of Rs 102.55 crore. The police arrested her at Kempegowda International Airport on charges of illegally smuggling gold. The case dates back to her arrest at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, where Ranya was caught attempting to smuggle gold into the country. During the operation, DRI officials seized 14.8 kilograms of gold in her possession.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the actress had travelled to Dubai four times over a span of 15 days, each time allegedly engaging in smuggling activities. The DRI concluded that these trips were part of a coordinated gold smuggling racket in which Ranya Rao played an active role.
Following her arrest, Ranya was convicted under the COFEPOSA Act (Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act). She has been sentenced to one year in prison under the stringent Preventive Detention provisions of COFEPOSA, which explicitly bar the possibility of bail for the entire duration of the sentence.
Ranya is serving a one-year sentence. Four accused including Ranya, were sent to jail on September 2. According to the information, Ranya’s property can be confiscated if the fine is not paid. Earlier, the Foreign Exchange Conservation and Smuggling Prevention Act (COFEPOSA) Advisory Board has sentenced Ranya to 1 year imprisonment.
