New Delhi: Delhi Police has busted a major cyber fraud running in the name of online dating and arrested Ugandan citizen Michael Iga from Burari area. The accused used to trap people by creating fake profiles of girls on social media platforms and then extort huge amounts of money from them. According to the police, Michael Iga was evading arrest by constantly changing his locations in Delhi-NCR for the past several months. So far, 14 cases of cyber fraud have been registered against him. Investigation has revealed that he has defrauded people of crores of rupees so far.
A man from Delhi’s Kishangarh area has filed a cyber fraud complaint on the NCRP portal. According to the victim, he met a woman on the dating app Happn, who claimed to be working at a beauty product company called “Echem.” During their online conversations, she initially gained the victim’s trust and gradually developed a relationship.
The accused then lured them with a supposed “business opportunity.” He claimed that a rare oil found in Assam was very expensive, selling at a price of ₹2 lakh per liter, and could be sold for ₹3.5 lakh per liter. Falling for this deception, the victim invested a large sum of money.
According to the accused woman, this oil is available in Assam for ₹2 lakh per liter and can easily be sold for ₹3.5 lakh per liter. Falling for this deception, the victim transferred ₹190,000 to various accounts. Upon receiving the money, the woman blocked the victim and disappeared. Later, it was discovered that the oil business, the company, and the woman’s identity were all completely fake.
Upon receiving the complaint, police launched an investigation and arrested a Ugandan citizen, Michael Iga, from the Burari area. The accused is said to be part of a network that defrauds people by creating fake profiles on social media. He already has 14 cases of cyber fraud registered against him, and he has defrauded millions of people.
