A 60-year-old man who had been on the run over 20 years after killing his wife in Delhi had been caught by the Delhi Police in Lucknow, according to officials who made this announcement on Monday.

Veerpal alias Maiju, the accused, had gone into hiding after he had allegedly beaten his wife to death using a brick in 2004. In 2005, he was proclaimed an offender. Since that time, he had adopted a different identity, Vijay alias Ramdayal, and began a new life in Lucknow, where he remarried and had three daughters.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Aditya Gautam said the case was registered way back on 22 September 2004, when the Delhi Police was informed about a tenant who had beaten up his wife and child before fleeing. The officers who arrived at the health facility discovered a woman gagged into a pool of blood. There was a blood-stained brick, a broken tooth, and shattered bangles–of the dreadful attack–near her.

They found that Veerpal did not have a good life with his wife and used to have problems with his wife. One of their maimed children, who was on the scene, also pointed to both Veerpal and his brother Suresh Kumar alias Saiju as the attackers. Suresh was subsequently charged and found guilty, and later sentenced to life imprisonment in 2007. Veerpal was, however, able to disappear without a trace.

Having escaped Delhi, Veerpal broke all his bonds with his hometown of Farrukhabad and sold his ancestral property. He was living and working as a daily wage labourer under a false name.

Lucknow was discovered as the hiding place of the criminal by the Delhi Police through years of research. Veerpal took the blame after being questioned and his confession offered relief to a case, which evaded arrest in more than 21 years.
