New Delhi: A 59-year-old Mohan Rai of Uttam Nagar has been arrested for allegedly cheating a Delhi businessman of ₹30 lakh in a fake gold scam, police said Monday. One of his accomplices still abides in hiding. During the investigation, authorities have also recovered ₹1.70 lakh from Rai’s possession.
In November last year, Ramesh Sharma, the hardware shop owner, introduced Gaurav Soni, the businessman from Paschim Vihar, to the fraudsters. During Soni’s journey, her destination referred to as ‘mother’ and two men whom she assumed to be her husband and son. They told him that they had dug gold a few days ago during their digging work at their residence in Mathura, which they wanted to sell.
The fraudsters then first gave Soni two golden pearls, and after testing them, they found out that the pearls were pure at 78%. This initial proof convinced Soni, and now, with a gold necklace weighing close to 2 kg displayed before him, he was shown proof. Soni bought the deal for ₹80 lakh, with Soni giving ₹30 lakh on the spot and the rest upon final verification.
But when Soni got the gold and had it thoroughly tested, he found it was fake. The sellers approached the policemen, but their phones were switched off, and efforts to contact them proved futile. An FIR was lodged at Palam Village Police Station on December 25.
Police traced culprits in over 100 mobile numbers and IMEI numbers during investigations. Mohan Rai was caught on March 3. Rai admitted to running the scam with his accomplices Babu Lal and Lakshmi, who helped him with counterfeit gold. Rai admitted that he was entitled to get his share, ₹9.5 lakh, from the fraudulent transaction. The other accused is still being sought by police.
