On Saturday, a Delhi court granted bail to Gaganpreet Makkad, who is accused of a BMW car crash which killed a senior Finance Ministry employee. It happened in the Dhaula Kuan locality of Delhi earlier this month, when Makkad purportedly drove the BMW that hit Navjot Singh (52) and his wife. The accident resulted in the tragic death of Singh, the then Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs and his wife was seriously injured.
A case was filed against the driver under Sections 281(rash driving), 125B (endangering the life or personal safety of another person), 105 and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the BNS in relation to the crash. In their investigation, the police paid attention to the fact that Makkad and her family chose to visit a hospital that was 19 kilometres away and not in the same vicinity as the accident site, instead of going to the closest medical centre, which could have offered urgent treatment to the victims.
Makkad was arrested after the crash and placed in judicial custody, which was subsequently renewed several times. Her detention was to be extended to September 27. On her last day of custody, the Judicial Magistrate, Ankit Garg, granted her bail. An elaborate order drawing a decision taken by the court is awaited.
The case has been an issue of interest in the eyes of the people because of such a tragic loss of a government official and the inquiries as to how emergency medical care was dealt with after the accident. Authorities are still investigating everything about the incident, such as the factors that led to the decision to bypass the surrounding hospitals, which may have resulted in a difference for the victims.
The bail is an important move in the current legal case since investigation and court proceedings are in progress in unravelling the story behind the accident and the liabilities of the accused.
