Neha Hiremath, daughter of Congress corporator Niranjan Hiremath, was stabbed to death at the premises of her college by her ex-classmate, Fayaz. The incident took place around 5 PM on Thursday when Neha was walking inside the college campus in Hubballi. CCTV footage reveals that after a couple of sentences were exchanged between them, the accused stabbed her several times and fled. As per sources, Fayaz, a resident of Savadatti in Belagavi district, is the son of a government school teacher; six months ago, he had stopped going to college after failing an examination. He had been stalking Neha for several days after she allegedly rejected his proposal.
Neha’s mother, Geetha, told the media, “I came to pick her up and spoke to her once on the phone. Within five minutes of our conversation, chaos erupted, and someone mentioned she had been stabbed. I haven’t seen her face yet. I still believe my daughter is alive. I can’t believe she is gone.”
Renuka Sukumar, Hubballi-Dharwad Commissioner of Police, briefed the media about the shocking incident and said, “What we know so far is that they knew each other as they studied together. Further details along with the motive will be known after interrogation.” The police have registered a murder case against Fayaz, and further investigation is underway.
Karnataka state BJP President BY Vijayendra said “In a horrific incident, a 24-year-old girl, daughter of a Congress corporator has been has been hacked to death in broad daylight by Fiyaz, reportedly for refusing his proposal for marriage. Gaurantee of Safety for Women has been pathetically absent since Congress came into power”.
Meanwhile, Hubballi witnessed massive protests in different places, with members of various organisations and different communities, including Muslims, coming on the streets to condemn the incident and seek capital punishment for the accused.
