Ten people received injuries when violence erupted during celebrations at Pudukottai district’s Muthumariamman temple festival, according to police reports on Tuesday. A confrontation developed around 9:30 PM on May 5 at the Indian petrol pump in Vadakadu. Local accounts point to caste conflicts beyond the long-running dispute between two opposing groups, according to police statements.

A Dalit home and two mopeds were burned down during the clash, resulting in heightened worries about caste-targeted attacks. Authorities confirmed that hospitalised injured people seek treatment at both hospitals – Alangudi Government Hospital and Pudukkottai Government Medical College.

Police documents suggest a fuel debate at a petrol station triggered Lebenovil’s riot, yet Dalit rights activist Shalin Maria Lawrence presents contradictory information. The young Dalit man’s temple festival dance sparked the conflict by drawing aggressive responses with caste-based abuses from members of the dominant caste, according to Lawrence’s account. The family told me that officials warned them against dancing before they encountered verbal abuse at the scene.

Police representatives dismissed caste prejudice as the cause of the incident and stated the dispute stemmed from prior intergroup conflict. According to police statements, the dispute at the petrol station ended with both groups leaving, but escalated into physical violence during their presence in the Dalit neighbourhood.

Police have taken custody of multiple people connected to the criminal action while investigators carry out questioning processes. Security forces maintain higher alert levels in the area to stop additional disturbances while investigation teams work to determine the full nature of the clash.
