A Central Excise Department officer and his mother and sister were found dead in their home at Eachamukku in Kochi on Friday. On Friday, Thrikkakara police confirmed the incident and registered a case of unnatural death, though initial investigations suggest that it could be a case of suicide.
The deceased officer, who was in his 40s, was serving as an Additional Commissioner of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST). He was from Ranchi, Jharkhand and the three had probably been dead for at least four days when their bodies were discovered by the police.
The officials said the officer has been on leave for several days and was to resume duty. When he did not report to work after the leave was over, his colleagues became worried and went to his official quarters to check on him. When they got there they smelled a bad odor coming from the residence and called the police.
When the officers entered the house, they saw that the officer and his sister were hanging and their mother was found lying down in one of the rooms in the house. The cause of death is still unclear and the authorities have not ruled out the possibility of the three having committed suicide.
In view of this, the Thrikkakara police have started a detailed investigation, which includes forensic examinations and inquiries from colleagues and neighbours to ascertain the sequence of events that led to the tragedy. The authorities are also looking into any financial, professional, or personal distress that may have led to the incident.
