Bengaluru police are investigating a big time heist where men, who were not identified but the police say impersonated Reserve Bank of India officials, intercepted an ATM cash van and made off with close to 7 crores of money on Wednesday. Videotapes of the CCTV cameras of the incident were released next day and this provided the investigators with some vital initial images of the movement of the cash van.

The robbery was allegedly done in the area of Ashoka Pillar as the van was taking cash at a JP Nagar bank branch to various ATMs. As per the initial investigation, a gang of men came in a vehicle bearing a Government of India sticker on their vehicle. They pulled the van and claimed they were carrying out document verification then overpowered the staff.

The suspects are said to have ordered their employees into their vehicle with the boxes of cash and then drove towards Dairy Circle. The employees were subsequently found being dropped off without any harm, and the recruits were gone with the money, and police were desperately searching leads.

Karnataka Home Minister H. Parameshwara speaking to the media on Thursday said he was shocked to see the daring of the crime. He said this has never happened in Bengaluru. The minister further stated that investigators have got first hand information about the possibility of a person having prior information about the cash being carried to load an ATM.

As the police officials turned out, over 50 CCTV videos of the location and surrounding roads are under review to trace the order of events and trace the vehicle of the suspects. They are also confirming that the criminals used several vehicles as a way of deceiving the investigators.

City police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh stated that the theft was stolen on Wednesday afternoon and that the loss was calculated at 7 crore, however, the actual amount is yet to be ascertained. The transport driver, he said, did not give clear details and so there was need to verify.
