Imphal: A group of officials from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) led by Special Director Ajay Bhatnagar will be arriving in Imphal on Wednesday via a flight. Their purpose is to kickstart an investigation into the disappearance and alleged killing of two students in the state on July 6, according to reliable sources.
The decision to involve the CBI in this case was promptly made after the Manipur government handed over the investigation to the agency. The team, headed by Ajay Bhatnagar, who holds a position within the CBI, will also include Joint Director Ghanshyam Upadhyay, who is already stationed in Imphal.
This investigative unit comprises experienced officers with knowledge in aspects of crime investigation such as special crimes, crime scene reconstruction, interrogation techniques, and technical surveillance. Furthermore, it includes experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory of the CBI, thereby strengthening their capabilities to handle cases.
The distressing case centers around two missing students named Phijam Hemjit (20) and Hijam Linthoingambi (17). Surfaced photos on media have shocked the public; one image allegedly shows these students accompanied by two armed individuals, while another portrays their lifeless bodies.
The authorities were initially unable to figure out where they were. Their cell phones were discovered to be turned off.
Investigators managed to track the location of their cell phones to Lamdan, a place near the winter flower tourist spot, in Churachandpur district.
