In a huge cybercrime breakthrough, Pramod Kumar Raj, who lives in Bhagwanpur Bochaha, Bihar, is arrested by Muzaffarpur Police on allegations of producing and sharing AI-generated deepfake videos and audio clips of the highest leadership in India, who is Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu. The arrest was carried out based on an investigation by the police who received some reports of misleading content circulating on social media.
The authorities were informed that it was possible to produce and spread digitally manipulated videos and audio through the use of artificial intelligence technology, according to a press release by the Office of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Muzaffarpur. It is also claimed that the content utilized the image, voice, and likeness of the President and Prime Minister in creation of fake content that might confuse the masses and bring the offices of highest constitutional offices into disrepute.
Police claimed that initial investigations suggest that the purpose of creating the AI-generated content was to disorient the general population and undermine confidence in democratic institutions and disrupt social harmony. Authorities cautioned that such content might find its way to the nation to propagate anti-nationalism, generate rumours and create social tensions that would be a grave security hazard to the law and order.
The office of the SSP said that the deployment of advanced AI technology to develop and distribute fake information against the top positions in the country is a formidable crime. The suspect is arrested and the complex cyber crime case has been filed under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.
Law enforcement is already looking into the scope of the spread of such deepfakes and even studying the online footprint of the accused with an aim of determining the potential partners or sites that were employed to spread the content. The investigation emphasizes the problem of increasingly challenging AI-generated misinformation in India and the necessity to be careful of the digitally manipulated information.
