Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced the formation of a fast-track court to ensure speedy justice in the case of singer Zubin Garg’s death. He said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has made significant progress in the investigation of the case and assured that the charge sheet will be filed on time. Sarma said that the government has formed a powerful committee which will approve the design and drawing of Zubin Garg’s memorial. This committee will include his wife Garima Saikia Garg, family members and close friends.
“We want to ensure that Zubin Garg’s memory lives on as a cultural heritage of Assam. The memorial to be built in his memory will serve as a source of inspiration for music lovers,” the Chief Minister said.
He said that in addition to the fast-track court, a Special Public Prosecutor will also be appointed on the recommendation of the Advocate General of Assam to ensure effective and speedy trial of the case. The Chief Minister also informed that the Singapore government had granted permission to the Assam Police team to travel to Singapore on October 21. He said, “We are grateful to the Singapore government for accepting our request. This is the result of the Assam government’s persistent efforts.” Sarma further stated that he had personally met External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar. He said, “Dr. Jaishankar immediately spoke to the Singapore authorities and expressed his concern over the Assam Police team’s denial of permission. It was due to his intervention that Singapore granted this permission.”
