In a significant development for Indian law enforcement, Harpreet Singh, alias Happy Passia, an absconding gangster wanted in connection with 14 grenade attacks in Punjab, has been detained in the United States. The Indian Express reported the apprehension, citing sources within Indian intelligence agencies.
Happy Passia had been on the radar of Indian authorities for a series of terror-related incidents in Punjab over the past several months. These attacks, involving the use of grenades, targeted police establishments, religious sites, and even the residences of public figures, creating an atmosphere of fear and instability in the state.
According to intelligence reports, Happy Passia allegedly collaborated with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), as well as known terrorist Harvinder Singh Sandhu, alias Rinda, and the Khalistani organization Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) to orchestrate these attacks. He is also implicated in a grenade attack in Chandigarh. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had earlier announced a reward of ₹5 lakh for information leading to his capture and had obtained a non-bailable warrant against him.
The detention of Happy Passia in the United States is considered a major breakthrough for Indian security agencies. It underscores the international reach of Indian law enforcement in pursuing individuals involved in terror activities. He is currently in the custody of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Indian authorities are expected to initiate the process for Happy Passia’s extradition to India to face charges related to the numerous grenade attacks and his alleged involvement in terrorist activities aimed at destabilizing Punjab. This development marks a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to counter terrorism and organized crime networks operating across borders.
