When the market collapsed, traders could have appreciated this respite on Dalal Street. But the business holidays of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) are quite different from this. While Makar Sankranti, Pongal, and Lohri are normally rejoicing festivals of the new year for farmers all over India January 14 will not be a trading holiday according to the official calendar of the exchanges.

These regional festivals and the coming festive season in India have seen many investors and traders display interest in relation to market operations. According to the schedule, both the BSE and NSE will remain open, with trading in equities, derivatives, bonds, commodities, and currencies taking place during regular hours from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM.

The holidays BSE and NSE follow, consist of all the national holidays and important religious or other festive occasions which are celebrated almost in every part of the country. This is the reason why Makar Sankranti and Pongal can be considered Regional holidays for states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. These do not normally accord trading holidays unless they coincide with other national occasions.

In the case of 2025, both BSE and NSE together have planned trading holidays 14 for essential occasions such as Diwali, Holi, Eid, Republic Day, Independence Day and others. Regional based festivals like Pongal, Ugadi and Onam are absent from this list unless these fall under considerable festivals.

This means that important cultural differences were met while, at the same time, social life maintained continuity through market functioning. These festivals are mostly enjoyed by traders from those specific regions, but the market is always made available, and the trading continues representing market depth. From their perspective as traders and investors, people need to get acquainted with the calendar of official holidays in the countries they invest in.
