Mahashivratri is observed on February 26 in India so the Indian stock market will remain closed on this day. To this end, trading activities on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) as well as the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) in all segments, i.e. Equity, Derivatives, Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB), Currency and Interest rate derivatives will be suspended.

It is the first 2025 stock market holiday. As per the schedule announced at the beginning of 2025, the exchanges will have 14 holidays throughout the year. On all weekdays (except designated public holidays), the stock market stays in operation. In addition, Saturdays and Sundays are trading days. However, the Feb. 1, 2025 market, was kept open in a special arrangement for the presentation of the Union Budget 2025.

NSE and BSE Performance Ahead of Holiday

The stock market appeared to be in recovery mode on Tuesday, but it was off to a flat start. The BSE Sensex stood at 74,719.09, up by 264.68 points (0.36%) at 10:03 AM, and the Nifty 50 rose by 45.05 points (0.2%) to 22,598.40.

On Monday, however, markets showed a sharp decline, and the key indices closed at lower levels. In equity benchmarks, the Sensex closed down at 74,454.41, while the Nifty 50 declined to close at 22,553.35.

Now, investors will have to wait till the market reopens on February 27, 2025, to assess further movements and trends. Post-holiday trading is likely to get crowded by the cues and movements globally and the domestic economic indicators, market analysts say.
