GURUGRAM – InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, the holding company of India’s top airline IndiGo, disclosed in an exchange filing on Tuesday that Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers resigned with immediate effect. This is a major change in the airline’s leadership, which has faced the most turbulent period in its flight history.

The Board expressed gratitude for Mr. Elbers’ contributions since his appointment in September 2022. During his tenure, IndiGo achieved notable milestones, including:

  • Crossing the $10 billion revenue mark.
  • Expanding the fleet to over 440 aircraft.
  • Securing a historic order for 500 Airbus A320-family planes.

Leadership Transition

In an exchange filing, the Board of Directors stated that the Board had accepted Mr. Elbers’ resignation and waived his notice period, as requested by the CEO. Rahul Bhatia, the Managing Director and Co-founder, is managing the company’s affairs on an interim basis.

Although Mr. Elbers gave reasons for his resignation, stating that he is resigning due to “personal reasons,” this is also in the aftermath of the airline’s most serious operational meltdown in December 2025. This came after the airline failed to adjust to the new Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules, resulting in the cancellation of 2,500+ flights and affecting 300,000+ passengers.

Between December 3 and 5, IndiGo cancelled over 2,500 flights and delayed nearly 1,900 more, affecting over 300,000 passengers.

The DGCA imposed a record fine of ₹22.20 crore and issued show-cause notices directly to Elbers. While he initially survived calls for his resignation, the crisis significantly dented the airline’s reputation for punctuality.
