For the assessment year 2025-26, the Income Tax Department has put out the ITR-1 to ITR-7 forms, plus the new ITR-U form. Thanks to the new ITR-U, taxpayers can now file or correct earlier returns for up to 48 months, as per the recent Finance Act. Even though these tax forms are offered for download from the main website, taxpayers are still unable to submit their returns online, since the e-filing function is not yet running.
The Income Tax Department offers filing utilities for filing taxes by computer easily and simply. There were three formats for the utilities offered last year: online, Java (or JSON) and Excel. Many salaried taxpayers find that the online utility is helpful because it has their salary, interest income and tax deductions ready for review. Often, tax professionals choose the Excel or desktop editions of the form, which require them to download it, update it locally and re-upload it.
The fact that these e-services have not yet been launched has led many to ask if the e-filing deadline might be changed. No explanation has been given by the tax department, yet experts are guessing that this year’s changes to the ITR forms may make it take the software additional time to adapt during registration.
Given the delay, it seems unlikely that the 2025 deadline for those who don’t get an audit will be pushed back. In past years, most of the returns were submitted in June or July, so the department could work out technical glitches and handle all the returns more quickly. Return processing now takes place much quicker than before.
It is advised for taxpayers to keep themselves updated and visit the income tax portal often.
