IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, announced on Tuesday the appointment of former British Airways chief William Walsh as its new CEO. A seasoned airline industry veteran, Walsh currently serves as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The announcement comes less than three weeks after IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers abruptly resigned.
Announcing the appointment of William Walsh as CEO—which is subject to regulatory approval—IndiGo said in a press release that his tenure at IATA ends on July 31 and he is expected to take charge on or before August 3.
IndiGo has appointed William Walsh as its new CEO. Walsh is currently the Director General of IATA and will replace Pieter Elbers. Walsh, who previously served as CEO of British Airways and IAG, will join the Indian low-cost airline until August 3, 2026, after stepping down from IATA. This appointment comes at a time when IndiGo has faced significant flight disruptions.

Walsh, commonly known as ‘Willie’, previously served as CEO of British Airways and IAG (International Airlines Group—a holding company that includes airlines such as Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Level and Vueling).
He further added that he is a well-known and highly capable leader in the aviation industry. He possesses a rare combination of global vision, operational expertise in building customer-centric airlines, deep industry experience, and values-based leadership—making him the perfect fit to lead IndiGo at this critical juncture in its growth.
