Google Chrome, the world’s most popular internet browser, is now working on a new feature that will detect potentially fraudulent websites with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Currently, this feature is being tested in Chrome Canary, the experimental version of Chrome. It is called “Client Side Detection Brand and Intent for Scam Detection.” Essentially, it checks the brand and intent behind a website to determine whether it’s trying to deceive users. For example, if you land on a page impersonating Microsoft’s tech support, the system will flag it as a scam.
Chrome’s Enhanced Protection is now more powerful, thanks to AI. Previously, this feature could only offer basic protection against malicious websites and downloads. But with AI, it can now analyse web content in real time. This helps in offering more advanced security. It means that the feature can spot phishing attempts, fake urgency cues, and misleading branding that may indicate a scam.
How will this feature work?
This new feature will work with the help of LLM (Large Language Model) present on the device. Since the processing is completely on the device, your data privacy is maintained and no information is sent to the cloud. This feature will be available on Mac, Linux and Windows versions, which will be beneficial for users browsing on unknown or untrusted devices.
How to try it?
If you want to try this feature first, follow the steps below:
