Ahead of Parliament’s much anticipated Budget session, an all-party meeting was convened at the Parliament Annexe building in New Delhi. Political leaders of different parties were present at the meeting chaired by Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Kiren Rijiju, JP Nadda, Arjun Ram Meghwal, and L Murugan. Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh, K Suresh, and Gaurav Gogoi, and TMC MPs Sudip Bandyopadhyay and Derek O’Brien were among those who attended. Besides, leaders like RSP MP NK Premachandran, BJD MP Sasmit Patra, DMK MP TR Baalu, SP MP Ram Gopal Yadav, JMM MP Mahua Maji, and others also participated in the discussions.
‘This is a normal procedure with every parliamentary session,’ said RSP MP NK Premachandran. Opposition parties have said they will be ready to enable Parliament to function smoothly if the government takes steps to strengthen the cooperation. But he added that the opposition is set to raise major questions during the session, including the economic slowing, hike in prices, and unemployment. He said the opposition is committed to positive dialogue and a peaceful process as long as the government is willing to engage in dialogue.
Parliament’s Budget session is scheduled to begin on January 31, with the budget presentation being on February 1. The session is due to run until April 4, according to the official calendar. First and foremost, it is a precursor to the year of discussions to come, with the government and opposition both gearing up for debates and deliberations, which will ultimately determine some key policy decisions for the coming year.
