New Delhi: The capital typically experiences severe cold in late December, but this time the weather has taken an early turn. The temperature dropped to 9 degrees Celsius on Sunday morning, the lowest minimum temperature for November in the last three years. The sudden increase in cold has disrupted people’s daily routines, while weather experts attribute it to the effect of cold winds and clear skies in the northern region.

This year, the cold has arrived in Delhi much earlier than usual. Typically, the first three weeks of November are marked by mild winter, but this time, the weather has taken a sudden turn, sending the mercury plummeting.

According to weather experts, snowfall in the higher Himalayan regions and cold winds blowing from the northwest are causing a significant drop in temperatures in the capital. On Sunday, the minimum temperature at Delhi’s standard observatory, Safdarjung, was recorded at 9 degrees Celsius, 4.5 degrees below normal. This is the lowest minimum temperature for November in the past three years. Previously, on November 22, 2022, the mercury had reached 8.9 degrees Celsius. The sudden increase in cold has made people feel the chill of December.

According to meteorologists, a cold wave is considered if the minimum temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius and is 4.5 degrees or more below normal. However, to declare a cold wave in any area, this criterion must be met for two consecutive days and such conditions must be recorded at at least two weather stations.

Palam experienced the coldest weather

The Meteorological Department predicts that the cold in Delhi will intensify over the next three to four days. Due to the continued active northerly winds, the chill may intensify in the morning and evening. On Sunday, the Palam area experienced the coldest daytime temperatures, with a maximum temperature of 24.9 degrees Celsius, 3.5 degrees below normal. Experts say this drop in maximum temperature is rare in November. The Meteorological Department says that light to moderate fog is likely in various areas of Delhi in the coming days. As the fog increases, temperatures may drop further, which is expected to intensify the chill.
