In a report, Syrian officials at the highest rank and the Middle Eastern officials have cited that Syria has managed to prevent two assassination attempts by Islamic State (IS) militants against President Ahmed al-Sharaa. The events highlight the growing personal danger to the Syrian leader as he gets ready to a historic meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House – the first-ever visit of a Syrian leader to Washington. Their meeting is scheduled on Monday and it is likely to predicate Syria as a member of the global fight against IS led by the US.
Security sources claimed that, the assassination plans were identified and they were eliminated during the last few months. Reportedly, one of the attempts was arranged during a mass gathering during which President Sharaa was to speak but the authorities did not give details citing security reasons. Formalists highlighted how the rapid response of intelligence services in Syria averted the possible destabilizing crisis. The Syrian Information Ministry refused to release any official comment on the issue.
Such revelations are at an opportune political moment to Sharaa who came to power in December, when his Islamist-supporting group toppled the previous leader Bashar al-Assad. After coming into power, Sharaa has tried to rebrand his image as a revolutionary leader into a statesman who is pragmatic, a leader responsible of national reconstruction and reconciliation, following over a decade of civil war.
The fact that he is expected to meet with President Trump is a major change in terms of diplomacy. The involvement in the US-led anti-IS alliance will enable Sharaa to sever Syria’s relationship with Russia and Iran and form a strategic alliance with Washington and a number of Arab countries. According to analysts, Sharaa will leverage the white house discussions to seek American support on the postwar reconstruction of Syria and seek wider global acknowledgement of his government a move that can re-write the geopolitical course of the nation.
