A 25-year-old man was brutally hacked to death by a gang in the Tiruchirappalli police quarters in an outrageous act when Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was in the city on a regular visit. The case has brought a lot of concern regarding the law and order situation in the state given that it happened in a secure police residential compound.

The dead person was a real estate businessman named Thamaraichelva of Bheemanagar who had been hunted by a five-member gang in an area called Marsingpet. In his desperate effort to save himself he fled to the new police residential quarters that were near his place. But the gang entered the premises and attacked him brutally with sharp weapons that killed him immediately and ran out of the premises.

The killing in a police compound has appalled people and has attracted furor among people in Tamil Nadu. Not only has the incident revealed glaring deficits in security, but it has also indicated the increasing level of concern among people about the worsening law and order situation. A case has been registered at the Palakkarai Police Station and several teams have been deployed in order to track the culprits and arrest them.

The then BJP President in Tamil Nadu K. Annamalai vehemently criticized the incident terming it as symptomatic of the breakdown of law and order in the ruling DMK administration. Going to X (a former Twitter account), he wrote, “Every day in Tamil Nadu, a murder takes place under the DMK regime. He further stated that such a gruesome murder could take place in the midst of police quarters, and that too when the Chief Minister was on the move in the city, speaks volumes of the pathetic condition of governance.

Annamalai also added that there is a danger to the security of the citizens in Tamil Nadu, and women, seniors, and children are no longer safe. The gruesome killing has again created a political frenzy on the issue of increasing crime and governmental failures within state.
