New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi escalated his attack on the Election Commission and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday, presenting what he claimed was the third set of evidence pointing to widespread electoral fraud in Haryana. The centerpiece of his explosive press conference was the photograph of a Brazilian model, which he alleged was used to register 22 duplicate votes across various polling booths in the state under multiple names.
Addressing the media in New Delhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha displayed a slide from the voter roll, asking, “Who is this lady? What is her name? Where does she come from? But she votes 22 times in Haryana, at 10 different booths, and has multiple names: Seema, Sweety, Saraswati, Rashmi, Vilma… But turns out she is actually a Brazilian model,” he alleged.
Gandhi claimed this was part of a larger “systemic manipulation” uncovered by “The H Files,” alleging that nearly 25 lakh (2.5 million) voters in Haryana—roughly one in eight—were either fake, invalid, or duplicate entries. He asserted that this operation was specifically designed to “convert a Congress landslide victory into a loss” in the recent Haryana assembly elections.
His attention to Gen Z — roughly those born in the late 1990s, the age group of protesters who recently toppled a government in neighouring Nepal — was clear in the very first few sentences at the Wednesday press conference at the Congress national headquarters.
“I want Gen-Z to take this seriously, because your future is being taken away from you. They are the one being stolen from,” he said at the start of his presentation, barely two days before voting begins in the Bihar election.
The Election Commission of India has previously dismissed similar allegations by Gandhi as “baseless,” with officials noting that the Congress party had not filed official appeals against the state’s electoral rolls. However, Gandhi’s focus on the striking visual proof of the Brazilian model’s repeated photo has immediately ignited a fresh political storm and public debate on the integrity of the voter registration process.
