Mumbai: Set in 1980s India, the film follows the life of a woman named Shazia Bano who seeks justice for herself and her three kids after they are abandoned by her husband Abbas Khan, who marries someone else. She demands her rightful child support as a housewife amid his attempts to silence her with triple talaq, and drags him to the court for it.
Yami Gautam who is playing the role of Shah Bano, described her role in Haq as ‘ideal’ and reflected on her portrayal of Shah Bano, saying, “This is a role that any actor would dream of. The first time I came across her name, Shah Bano, was when it was making headlines. I vividly recall the haunting gaze in her headshot; it had such depth.”
A few days before it hits the theatres, Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam’s legal drama Haq has run into legal controversy. The family of Shah Bano, upon whom the film is based, has alleged that it breaches their privacy and that the filmmakers did not obtain their consent before making the film. Shah Bano’s granddaughter has moved court, demanding a halt to the film’s release as well.
Siddiqua Begum, Shah Bano’s daughter, filed a petition in the Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court seeking a stay on Haq’s release. The film is slated to hit theatres on November 7.
