On Monday, at least ten individuals were killed and 18 others injured due to a speeding dumper truck that led to a huge traffic jam of 17 vehicles in Jaipur, in the Loha Mandi region belonging to the Harmada Police Station. The accident happened at the time of about 1 p.m. when the dumper, which visited road No. 14, apparently lost control when trying to enter the highway at a petrol pump.
The eyewitnesses have indicated that the heavy vehicle was travelling at an unusual speed when it hit a group of vehicles that were stalled in traffic at the intersection. So serious was the effect that a number of cars and motorcycles were crushed at the location and the place was in commotion. People living in the vicinity and consumers, who saw the incident, rushed to assist the victims before the police and rescue personnel reached the location.
The officials of the Harmada Police Station, as well as the emergency response teams, rushed with a rescue mission. Those injured were taken to the local hospitals and three of them, who were in critical conditions were taken to the SMS Hospital Trauma Centre, where they got advanced treatment. The police reported that the amount of the casualties might increase because some of the injured are in a fight against death.
Early probes have shown that failure of brakes or careless driving could have been the cause of the accident, but still the cause is yet to be established. The police are in the process of tracing the driver who is also said to have left the scene after the accident.
Jaipur Police Commissioner and other administrative officers of their area went to the site of the accident to supervise relief operations. To remove the mess and resume traffic of the concerned road, cranes and tow trucks were on call.
The gruesome event has created road safety outrage among people and the control of heavy vehicles in the city that the citizens of the city are insisting on tighter control of traffic laws to avoid the occurrence of such tragedies in future.
