A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale struck western Turkey late on Monday, causing panic, as well as some structural collapse among buildings already weakened by an earlier tremor. The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) indicated that the earthquake originated in the town of Sindirgi in Balikesir Province. The quake struck at 22:48 local time (19:48 GMT) at a shallow depth of about six kilometers (3.7 miles) below the surface, contributing to its severity.

The tremor was felt in a wide area, impacting Istanbul, Bursa, Manisa, and Izmir, which prompted people to leave their homes in fear. Ali Yerlikaya, the Minister of Interior, reported that three unoccupied buildings in Sindirgi collapsed, as well as a two-story store that had previously suffered structural damage in the earlier quake.

Balikesir Governor Ismail Ustaoglu stated that 22 people were injured, most of whom were injured falling or getting hurt in panic and not due to the damage from buildings. Emergency teams were sent to inspect the structural stability and assist in relieving impacted families and residents, while responders continued to monitor aftershocks and secondary risks.
