The Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed an examination into an alleged misappropriation of public money at Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI) located in Pune, which is managed by Sharad Pawar, the Nationalist Congress Party- Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SP) president. This comes following the state receiving allegations against the management of funds at the institute.

Confirming the issue, BJP Leader and Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said the inquiry would take place because it is a standard procedure when complaints are filed. “If everything is transparent, nothing needs to be worried about. The inquiry is not politically motivated,” he said.

NCP-SP Legislator Rohit Pawar criticized the move, calling it a “political vendetta.” He stated the VSI, one of the country’s leading institutes undertaking research and training for the sugar industry, had achieved integrity under the leadership of Sharad Pawar. He added the inquiry by Fadnavis was likely an attempt to corner Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar politically since he became aligned to the BJP earlier in 2023. VSI, established by sugarcane growers in 1975, is an autonomous institution, previously the Deccan Sugar Institute, dedicated solely to research and development in the sugar industry.
