The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) site was briefly shut down on the morning of Saturday, on the eve of the Chhath Puja travel bookings. Most of the users turned to the social media platform X to complain that they could not access the portal or even book their tickets.

The gridlock happened when lakhs of passengers throughout the nation tried to book train tickets to come home and partake Chhath festival, which was one of the most important occasions for people in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Downdetector, an outage monitoring website, reported about 180 reports concerning IRCTC at about 10:07 a.m. on Saturday.

Despite no official statement being made by IRCTC about the disruption, the corporation responded to one user who posted a screenshot of a booking error and booking failure to the address by using the registered mobile no /email ID.

To cope with the present seasonal travel needs, Indian Railways has been running more than 12,000 special trains in the country. All these extra services will help serve the increased number of passengers who started during pre-Diwali time and continued during Chhath Puja.

The Railways have also made a lot of preparations in major railway stations to facilitate easy traveling during the festive season. Special holding areas having facilities like seats, drinking water, and health facilities have been established at major junctions like New Delhi, Anand Vihar Terminal, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, and Udhna.

According to the officials, these measures are aimed at decreasing overcrowding and creating comfort to waiting passengers. Though there was a temporary technical problem with the IRCTC portal, the Railways had guaranteed that there would be no effect on the train operations and special services during the Chhath period.
