At least 27 individuals were taken into custody on the basis of a violent encounter with the police over a land row in the Rajasthan district of Bharatpur, and two minors were taken into custody, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. This upheaval occurred in the village of Seupura village where the tension between two groups had allegedly been brewing for days over the possession of a piece of land.

On Monday, the battle extended to the streets with about 200 villagers assembling in Bhim Nagar Tiraha outside the Bayana town and blocking the state highway of Bharatpur-Karauli. A traffic jam was recorded as a result of the blockade, which lasted almost two kilometres, and commuters were left stranded.

Upon the arrival of police teams that came to calm the crowd and unlock the highway, the protesters were believed to have gotten violent and were throwing stones at the police. Some policemen also got some minor injuries, and at least two police cars were also destroyed in the encounter.

Bharatpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Digant Anand claimed that the situation was controlled after more troops were sent. “We have arrested 27 rioters, assaulters and one who has caused damage to the properties, and we have two minors detained.” The SP also said that two women were previously arrested in relation to the incident.

The police have initiated an investigation to find out additional individuals involved in the violence and also establish the exact cause of the disagreement.
