The anticipated reentry of Virat Kohli in international cricket in Australia did not spur the fans as it would have. The leadership of India looked out of shape, which can be excused since it was his first time at the high level of competition in a long time. Mitchell Starc ended his innings in Perth when Kohli slashed at a wide delivery and was caught at point sending him away with an eight-ball duck. This game can be the last time he visits Australia, and India has no more tours to Australia in the present Future Tours Programme that runs up until the beginning of 2027, the year when the next World Cup will be played. That would be no way to leave behind an empty hand as far as Kohli is concerned with an awesome record against Australia on their home soil.

Ricky Ponting, however, stressed that Kohli ought to be focused and hungry as opposed to living on his past success. Ponting, speaking before the first ODI at Perth, said that he would like Kohli to have short term aspirations and meaningful achievements rather than just awaiting the 2027 World Cup. “This is what I have never liked to hear anyone say, that they have accomplished everything in the game, and that is what Ponting has to say. Virat is a highly motivated individual, and I would hope that he has some physical targets that he would be aiming to achieve during this series, instead of hanging around until the next instalment of the World Cup arrives.”

With the second ODI being in place as India travels to Adelaide, both Kohli and Rohit Sharma have their own future in the ODIs against India. Before dismissing either legend, Ponting, however, was advised to be careful. He emphasized that rhythm and tempo following a premature are difficult to recover but he was optimistic that both of the players would recover. Adelaide is a wonderful bat and cricket place to play but they will have some of the best white-ball bowlers that the nation has ever had. Ponting said the challenge was real.
