High ranges of Kerala were pounded with bursts of heavy rain with strong winds on Monday, which brought havoc to many districts. The high ranges of Thiruvananthapuram to the north of Kozhikode and Kannur were continuously downpoured and overcast in the atmosphere through the day causing waterlogging, trees rooted up and traffic snarls.

Heavy rainfall that took place in Thiruvananthapuram almost an hour caused the buildup of water along the Thiruvananthapuram-Thenkasi road, which interfered with road traffic. Elavattom-Palode road was also affected in terms of inundation, which interrupted traffic. Floods were experienced in Kannur, with water breaking into houses and companies, and a wall collapsing in a family due to the excess rainfall.

In the other portions of the state cases of lighting damage and heavy winds were reported to have caused property damage. Mala, Thrissur, and Elanji are some of the houses damaged by lightning in Ernakulam. There were cracks found in walls and destruction of electrical gadgets in such accidents. In the year 2007, the severity of the storm is depicted in the escaped injury of a family in Pallippurm, Thrissur when an uprooted tree fell on their house.

Over the intense rainfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned four of the districts, Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram and Kozhikode, of very heavy rainfall and the other districts were put on yellow alert. Orange alert represents the range of 11 cm to 20 cm and yellow alert represents the range of 6 cm to 11 cm.

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) advised the people of landslide-, and mudslide-, and flood-prone regions to go to safer places as directed by the local authorities. The residents who lived along the banks of rivers and those living down the river of the dams were also encouraged to move ahead to stay out of harm way.
