At the age of 70, Professor K.C. Sinha, acclaimed for his authorship of nearly 70 mathematics textbooks and shaping generations of students in mathematics, has made a decidedly notable transition from academia to politics by filing his nomination as the Jan Suraaj candidate from the Kumhrar constituency of Patna for the upcoming Bihar elections. The former acting vice-chancellor of Patna University, Sinha has achieved broad respect from all age groups because of his contribution to the education of topics including algebra, calculus, trigonometry, vector geometry, and set theory.
Hailing from the Beur village of the Kaimur district, Professor Sinha has always excelled academically, being either at the top or very close to the top of his district when he was in school and again when he pursued his college and post-graduate studies. Sinha had a bit of bad luck at the point of narrowly missing the IAS and subsequently becoming ineligible to join the IPS. Sinha dedicated his time to teaching, starting as a lecturer at Jain College, Ara, before advancing to head of department, dean, principal and, ultimately, vice-chancellor of Nalanda Open University, in addition to the same position for four other universities.
Now, Sinha is joining Jan Suraaj, launched by one of his former students, Prashant Kishor. Sinha is optimistic that he will be able to apply his intelligence, education and experience to effect change through policy reform in education and agriculture. The combination of Bihar’s traditional muscle-and-money-based form of politics must be replaced with a form of thoughtful leadership and transparency.
