As he sought to rehash his long-held position about using tariffs to stop war between India and Pakistan, US President Donald Trump made an embarrassing mistake by calling India “Iran.” Speaking to a question about the importance of tariffs, Trump said that without tariffs, we would have no national security. He then attempted to give an instance to illustrate tariffs could be a successful tool of diplomacy.
Trump intended to refer to his prior statement about threatening a 200 per cent tariff on India and Pakistan, a step he claimed was successful in helping to prevent war between the nuclear rivals. Instead, he made the mistake of saying “If you look at Pakistan and Iran…” instead of India.
He then explained that he asked about countries being on the verge of war, and he indicated that tariffs changed the tone of negotiations. The misstep attracted notice and generated some additional reactions on the internet.
