On Monday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the introduction of three new criminal laws in India, indicating that the justice system in the country is now being governed by fairness and equity and not by pure punishment. In one of his speeches about the opening of a criminal justice exhibition in Jaipur, Shah stated that the reforms would be aimed at ensuring that all citizens can easily access justice in a timely manner.

The exhibition was located in the Jaipur Exhibition and Convention Centre (JECC). Authorities conducted protests underlining the change of the system towards a justice-focused, transparent, and efficient one. According to Amit Shah, these laws indicate the Indian devotion to the justice system that serves the population and does not merely punish lawbreakers.

The three new laws will make justice as easy and timely for all. With such reforms, the criminal justice system in this country will be informed by justice and not punishment, as Shah said. Another point that he emphasised is that the new framework is also intended to modernise India’s legal processes, make them faster, more citizen-focused, and open.

The recently established laws, i.e. Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, were adopted on July 1, 2024. They substitute the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and Indian Evidence Act of the colonial times. These reforms, according to the officials, make things less cumbersome, less time wastage and justice can be availed to every part of the society.

Besides law reforms, Shah encouraged people to contribute to the economy of the country as a country by focusing on local goods so as to make India a global production and consumption centre. The government aims at creating a system that will not only effectively administer justice to people but also help the nation realise the greater developmental objectives of the nation by aligning the judicial reforms with economic self-reliance.
