The United States President Donald Trump has declared that he intends to impose another 100 per cent tariff on Chinese products, an announcement that China has responded to by urging the U.S. to approach it with equality, respect, and mutual benefit. The reaction of Beijing was received on Monday, with the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responding to the issue at a regular press conference.
Lin condemned the unilateral trade action by Washington and gave a warning on how China would not fail to defend its national interest in case it was provoked. And it does not matter whether the U.S. decides to act alone, China will decisively make relevant responses to protect its lawful rights and interests, he said. Lin also urged the U.S. to turn back what Beijing characterised as the misplaced practices and revert to a more realistic manner of managing the trade relations.
It is the renewed tensions due to the decision of Trump to increase tariffs on Chinese imports by another hundred per cent beginning on November 1. This is in addition to the current 30 per cent level of tariff that was earlier agreed upon between the two countries in Geneva. The Chinese exports to the U.S. would be subject to tariffs amounting to 130 per cent once in place, which is an increase that has never been observed in recent years.
In a vehement statement, Trump took the initiative to defend his move on his Truth Social platform, and he had alleged that China had intensified the trade war. He alleged that Beijing had sent a hostile letter showing that it planned to introduce blanket export restrictions on almost all the products it produces and those produced in other countries. As Trump claims, these restrictions, which would start on November 1, 2025, would impact all countries in the world.
He termed the position of China as being more than aggressive and a moral outrage in global commerce. The former president contended that these actions came as a long-term plan of Beijing and needed a vigorous American reaction.
