NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi has warmly welcomed the “first phase” agreement of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan between Israel and Hamas, hailing the development as a significant breakthrough toward a durable resolution of the nearly two-year-old conflict in Gaza.

In a statement posted on social media, PM Modi praised President Trump’s role, noting that the progress provided a ray of hope for the volatile region. “We welcome President Trump’s leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress,” he wrote. “Indications of the release of hostages mark a significant step forward. India will continue to strongly support all efforts towards a durable and just peace.”

The first phase of the US-brokered plan centers on an immediate ceasefire, an exchange of all remaining hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, and the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza. The agreement, which was reached after intensive indirect talks, has been seen by global leaders as the most promising step yet to end the bloodshed.

Israel’s commitment to the immediate implementation of the first phase, following Hamas’ conditional acceptance, has been viewed by New Delhi as a crucial diplomatic victory. PM Modi’s endorsement aligns with India’s longstanding foreign policy goal of achieving peace and stability in the Middle East.

As negotiations move forward to tackle thornier issues like the demilitarization and post-war governance of Gaza, India’s strong vocal support reinforces its position as a key global player supporting international peace initiatives. The successful execution of this initial phase is now paramount to building momentum for a lasting solution.
