The secretariat of the Lok Sabha had on Tuesday asked the Union Home Ministry to give a factual report to it within three days on the attack on BJP MP Khagen Murmu in West Bengal. This order was issued after Murmu was injured, together with BJP MLA Sankar Ghosh, who were attacked by a mob in the flood- and landslide-hit Dooars area in the northern part of West Bengal on Monday.
Officials claim that the Lok Sabha secretariat has already written to the Home Ministry to provide a detailed Factual Note to the state government of West Bengal, which should be submitted to the Parliament within three days. This is one of the moves by the Lok Sabha to establish the facts behind the incident and hold people responsible.
The assault was directed at Murmu, the Lok Sabha member representing Maldaha, who was in flood-trodden areas of the Dooars region of Jalpaiguri to supervise the continuously ongoing relief and rescue efforts. A recent downpour has hit the area hard, resulting in total devastation of land and houses due to flooding and landslides, and local government and national authorities have been mobilizing efforts to offer relief.
Although the motive of the attack is yet to be established, the incident has raised questions regarding the security of elected officials when they are out in the field to visit disaster victims. Both Murmu and Ghosh were immediately given medical attention after they suffered minor injuries, and the local police are reportedly investigating the issue.
The factual note to be prepared by the Union Home Ministry is supposed to be prepared on the reports made by the state government, the police authorities, and the eyewitnesses. In the meantime, the action by the Lok Sabha makes it clear that Parliament takes the threat of attacks on its representatives seriously and requires the prompt reporting and remedial action.
