New Delhi: A hearing was underway in the Supreme Court on Monday before a bench headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud. During this, lawyer Rakesh Kishore Kumar suddenly tried to throw a shoe at Chief Justice Justice B.R. Gavai. However, security personnel immediately intervened and brought the situation under control and the lawyer was taken into custody. Delhi Police said that the accused lawyer was interrogated for about three hours. During this, it was investigated whether there was any big conspiracy behind his action. However, the interrogation did not confirm any criminal conspiracy or connection with any organization. Taking a tough stand, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has cancelled the license of accused lawyer Rakesh Kishore Kumar.
According to police officials, the Supreme Court administration did not file a formal complaint and, after internal discussions, the accused was released with a warning. Currently, the Delhi Police have prepared a report on the incident and are reviewing security arrangements to prevent a similar incident in the future.
Lawyer Rakesh Kishore Kumar has expressed no remorse for his actions even after the incident. During interrogation, he claimed he was guided by “divine power” and did what he felt was right. According to police sources, Kishore, a resident of Mayur Vihar, flatly refused to apologize. His family reportedly expressed displeasure over the incident and condemned the act. Delhi Police interrogated the accused for three hours within the Supreme Court premises. However, no formal complaint was filed by the Supreme Court, following which the police released the lawyer at around 2 pm. Officials said the accused’s shoes were returned to him after the proceedings were completed.
In a statement after the incident, Rakesh Kishore Kumar said he had no regrets about his actions and was ready to go to jail. He clarified that he had no affiliation with any political party. “It would have been better if he had been in jail. The family is very sad; they cannot understand,” he said. He reiterated that he had received guidance from a “divine power,” which led him to take this step. Kishore said he was upset by some comments made by the Chief Justice during the hearing of a case involving a headless idol of Lord Vishnu. He then decided to take this step.
Kishore explained that his anger wasn’t limited to the court proceedings. He was also hurt by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud’s recent statement in Mauritius, in which he said, “India’s judicial system is governed by the law, not the rule of the bulldozer.” Kishore said this comment “deeply saddened” him and he considered it a “disrespect” to India’s judicial system and the gods. He reiterated that he was being guided by a “divine power” and acted on what he felt was a divine signal. However, he also acknowledged that his family and relatives were extremely upset and unable to understand his actions.
