On Monday, the Bar Council of India (BCI) suspended advocate Rakesh Kishore from practice law after he had tried to hit the Chief Justice of India, BR Gavai, with his shoe on the Supreme Court premises. The scandalous episode happened during a hearing where a bench presided over by the CJI was discussing the naming of cases by attorneys.

It is reported that Kishore then just leapt towards the dais and took off his shoe, and tried to toss it at the Chief Justice. Security guards responded quickly, and they prevented the shoe before it landed on its target and rushed him out of the courtroom. The immediate response ensured that no bodily injuries were inflicted, and the situation did not develop further.

As Kishore was taken out of the courtroom, he was quoted as saying, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge,” which means, we will not tolerate any insult to Sanatan. The comment pointed out that the act was a result of a grievance or a protest, but the specifics of his outburst are still under investigation.

After the incidence, the Bar Council of India acted swiftly and suspended Kishore, without allowing him to practice law pending the investigation. The BCI has noted that this kind of behaviour is very unprofessional and unbecoming to an advocate, thus degrading the honour of the judicial system and legal system.

The officials of the Supreme Court security have already been said to have checked the incident and are most likely to propose further steps that would prevent any form of interruption in future. The event has cast doubt on the issue of security in the courtroom and the measures that need to be adopted to handle agitated persons in the courtroom.

The act has come under fire by legal professionals who have pointed out that lawyers are entitled to bring up concerns, but physical attacks and aggression toward judges is unacceptable and may create severe legal repercussions.
