Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Income Tax (IT) Department will look into claims of financial aberrations of the festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta. Mahanta was arrested last week in relation to the suspicious death of a famous Assamese singer, Zubeen Garg, in Singapore last month.
Garg, a 52-year-old, died while swimming at the sea when he came to Singapore to attend the North East India Festival (NEIF), which was arranged by Mahanta. After foul play allegations, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam police filed the cases of criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide short of murder, and death due to negligence against the manager of Mahanta and Garg, Siddharth Sharma. Mahanta and Sharma were arrested in Gurgaon and Delhi on the 1st of October, respectively. After their interrogations, the case was added with another charge of murder.
CID also detained the bandmate of Garg, Shekharjyoti Goswami, and singer Amritprava Mahanta who happened to be in Singapore during the death of the singer. On its part, the CID also filed a case against Mahanta on the basis of financial irregularities after it had located various documents, seals, and other evidence after conducting searches in his Guwahati residence.
In a press conference in Guwahati, Sarma said, I suppose even central government agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate and the Income Tax Department would ensure that they take notice of the financial anomalies of Shyamkanu Mahanta. We already have talks with these agencies so that the professional investigation may be guaranteed. We must ensure that there is no one out there who is related to these murders of Zubeen Garg who gets away with it.
On top of the four people who were arrested, the CID is also questioning the cousin of Garg, Sandipan Garg, an Assam police officer, who was in Singapore at the time of the incident.
