Jaipur: A massive fire that erupted late Sunday night in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the trauma centre at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur has tragically claimed the lives of at least six critical patients. The deceased include two women and four men.
The blaze, which officials currently suspect was triggered by a short circuit in the Neuro ICU’s storage area, caused widespread panic as thick, toxic smoke quickly engulfed the ward on the second floor. Eight patients, including three women, died after a massive fire broke out late Sunday night in the ICU of the trauma centre at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma visited the hospital to take stock of the situation and assured that a thorough investigation by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) is underway to determine the exact cause of the tragedy and hold any negligent parties accountable. Meanwhile, former CM Ashok Gehlot tweeted “The fire in the ICU of the trauma center at SMS Hospital, resulting in the death of 7 people, is extremely heartbreaking. I pray to God that there is minimal loss of life in this accident. May the Lord grant place to the departed souls at His divine feet and swiftly restore the health of the injured.”
According to Dr. Anurag Dhakad, In-charge of the Trauma Centre, 11 patients were in the affected ICU when the fire broke out. An additional 13 patients in an adjacent semi-ICU were successfully evacuated by swift-acting hospital staff and patient attendants. However, the critical nature and comatose state of those in the primary ICU, compounded by the inhalation of toxic fumes, made rescue efforts for the six victims unsuccessful despite attempts at CPR.
The horrifying scene saw attendants rushing patients out on their beds and trolleys into the hospital premises. Relatives of the deceased confronted state ministers who visited the site, alleging serious negligence and claiming that staff initially ignored warnings of a spark and subsequently fled as the fire spread.
