New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced on Friday that approximately ₹1.84 lakh crore remains unclaimed in banks and financial institutions across the country. The government has decided to return this money to the rightful owners or their families. A three-month special campaign called “Your Capital, Your Rights” has been launched to achieve this.
Finance Minister Sitharaman launched the national campaign at an event in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
She said this money includes dormant bank deposits, insurance proceeds, dividends, mutual funds, pensions, and investment returns that have been lying unclaimed for years.
The Finance Minister said, “These are not just figures on paper, but the capital of hardworking Indian families, which can help with education, health, and security. Our endeavor is to ensure that every Indian gets their due.”
Government focus: Awareness, Access and Action (3A model)
Sitharaman said that this campaign is based on the ‘3A model’ – Awareness, Accessibility and Action.
- Awareness: Citizens will be informed about how they can locate their own or their family’s unclaimed properties.
- Accessibility: The government has created several digital portals so that citizens can get information about their unclaimed money from the comfort of their homes.
- Action: The claim will be settled as soon as possible so that the beneficiaries can get the money immediately.
