Bareilly: Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh – The city of Bareilly has been placed under stringent security measures, including a complete internet shutdown, as authorities brace for potential unrest ahead of Friday prayers this evening. The preemptive action follows violent clashes that rocked the city last week, stemming from a cancelled demonstration over the controversial ‘I Love Muhammad’ poster row.

Internet suspended till Saturday

Internet services will remain suspended in four districts of the region until 3 pm on Saturday, October 4. The suspension, which began at 3 pm on Thursday, was imposed in view of Dussehra celebrations. The administration has suspended all mobile internet, broadband, and SMS services in Bareilly until Saturday afternoon. Roads in sensitive areas are reported to be largely deserted, with heavy deployment of security personnel, including the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and Rapid Action Force (RAF), visible across the city. Drones are also being used for aerial surveillance to monitor rooftops and ensure peace.

“All district magistrates, deputy collectors, police and administrative officials must discharge their responsibilities seriously. Any lapse will invite stern action,” Divisional Commissioner Bhupendra S Chaudhary said on Thursday.

Last week, the city witnessed significant violence after over 2,000 protestors gathered outside a mosque following Friday prayers. The crowd, angered by the cancellation of a protest called by a local cleric, clashed with law enforcement in an incident that involved stone-pelting and unrest. The crackdown by the police resulted in the subsequent arrest of over 80 people, including key instigators.

Authorities have issued a high alert for Bareilly and its surrounding districts, with officials appealing to the public to maintain peace and not heed rumours. Senior clerics have also urged worshippers to offer their prayers peacefully and return home immediately afterwards, underscoring the delicate security situation in the region. The security clampdown is a clear signal from the state government to maintain law and order following the disturbances of the preceding week.
