RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat announced on Thursday that the organisation has stood by its ideals in a century without being swayed by temptations of power and materialistic benefits. Speaking on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the annual Vijayadashmi celebration in Nagpur, Bhagwat claimed that his speech was founded on the experience and teachings of the Sangh over the last century.
He pointed out that though the RSS was welcome to participate in politics and provided numerous incentives over the years, the RSS remained concentrated on vyakti nirman – character building – through its shakhas. It is this commitment that he said has been the main mission of the organisation since its inception.
Bhagwat was also talking about the necessity of global reform and that immediate or violent reform usually is met with conflict and destruction. He instead promoted gradual, step-by-step change and told India that it needed to offer a model of development based on an integrated and holistic worldview. The world, he said, must be directed by dharma– not by ritual and custom, but by universal ethics and interrelations.
Bhagwat stressed on social change based on examples of integrity, selflessness and principled leadership. He told me that RSS shakhas are a source of continued unity and character in spite of adversity.
Bhagwat suggested that the diversity in India, in terms of religion, language, manners and style of living, was not a dividing factor but rather strength. Even communities adhering to other faiths of foreign origin should be treated with the same Indian civilisation and should treat each other with the same respect, he said, with the need to coexist in harmony and peace.
He denounced hooliganism scenes and efforts to bring communal disharmony and urged the law enforcing agencies to do so without bias. He further said that the young and responsible citizens should be ready, organised and vigilant which can be used to act in cases where there is need to restore social peace.
