Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh: A huge fraud syndicate in the guise of an RTO watchdog has been unearthed. Four people, one of them a fake Town Inspector (TI), and two fake constables are arrested by the police. The gang was preparing to do illegal extortion along highways, pretending to be an RTO inspection team.

The man who organised the whole operation, who is also referred to as the mastermind, is Shivam Chaturvedi. He supposedly coerced an online store operator into making counterfeit identity cards for him and his colleagues. The shop owner, who had that feeling that something was wrong, reported the matter to the Crime Branch, and this prompted immediate action.

Shivam lied when interrogated that he was a TI His accomplices, Pawan and Neeraj, portrayed themselves as constables. The fourth defendant, Ravindra, was their driver. The four suspects are all natives of the Sagar district.

Inquiries into the matter found that Shivam had paid [?]40,000 to Pawan and Neeraj to obtain fraudulent police identities and uniforms. The gang also set up a vehicle in order to make their operation even more legitimate. Ravindra had rented his car under an agreement of [?]55,000 per month.

The group was apparently going to patrol the highways and establish illegal checkpoints where they would extort money from truck drivers and commuters in the guise of carrying out document checks like an official RTO team. But they could only be thwarted before implementing their strategies owing to the prompt action of the Gwalior Crime Branch.

The police are currently investigating the sources of the fake IDs and uniforms and whether the gang had been connected with similar incidences in other districts. They are also investigating whether there were other participants or whether others knew about the operation or not. Another legal action is being followed, and the accused will be taken to court shortly.
