The Odisha government has put all the districts on high alert in the wake of heavy rainfall in much of the state with a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal developing into a depression, the officials said on Wednesday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) estimates that the distinct low-pressure area in the west-central Bay of Bengal has shifted north-northwestwards and has now been concentrated into a depression. According to the weather professionals, a depression occurs after a low-pressure area and before a cyclonic storm, which usually causes heavy rainfall, strong winds and potential flooding.
According to reports by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, some parts of Odisha have already been hit by torrential downpour, which has raised an alarm over waterlogging, flash floods, and landslides. At 11:30 am, the IMD system was located approximately 400 km east-southeast of Visakhapatnam, 420 km south-southeast of Gopalpur, 450 km south of Puri and 500 km south of Paradip.
The depression is likely to shift towards the North North west, deepen into a deep depression and traverse over the coast of Odisha and other adjoining Andhra Pradesh between Gopalpur and Paradip during the early hours of October 3.
The IMD has given a Red warning for October 2 in Puri and Jagatsinghpur districts, indicating that they are likely to experience over 20 cm of rainfall. A total of 14 districts are in the warning category as an Orange, and the rest 14 districts are in a warning Yellow category. Light to moderate precipitation is predicted over 25 out of 30 districts of the state, with occasional heavy precipitation in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangpur.
The Odisha government has directed the district collectors to have men and machinery in place to counter tragedies. The fishermen have been asked to avoid going out to sea along and off the Odisha coast between October 1 and October 4 due to rough weather conditions. The administration remains on high alert on the emerging system, calling on citizens to remain vigilant.
